“I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 (WEB)
Growing closer to Christ begins with recognizing how deeply we need Him. Jesus did not tell His disciples to produce spiritual life by their own strength. He called them to abide in Him, as a branch remains joined to the vine.
Christ is our life and strength
To abide in Christ is to depend on Him, trust His words, and welcome His presence into every part of life. We need Him when making difficult decisions, but we also need Him while working, preparing meals, caring for family, traveling, resting, and speaking with the people around us. No moment is too ordinary to be lived with Jesus.
Grace, not earning
We do not pray, read Scripture, or obey Christ to purchase salvation or persuade God to love us. Salvation is God’s gift. Spiritual practices help us turn our attention toward the Savior who has already shown us grace. We seek Him because He first loved us.
Rest in His grace
“for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9 (WEB)
When we fail, we do not need to hide from Him or promise to make ourselves worthy. We may confess our sin, receive His cleansing, and return to Him in faith.
Abiding through the ordinary day
Closeness with Christ is often formed through small moments of trust. We can speak to Him before answering a difficult message, ask for patience during an interruption, thank Him for a simple provision, or seek His wisdom before making a choice.
Jesus cares about the burdens we carry. Depending on Him does not mean that every problem immediately disappears. It means we no longer face our responsibilities, grief, uncertainty, or weakness alone. Christ remains our faithful source of wisdom, peace, and strength.
Bring every care to Him
“casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (WEB)
Following Him with a willing heart
Abiding in Christ includes listening to His Word and responding in obedience. This obedience is the fruit of faith and love, rather than a way to earn God’s favor. The Holy Spirit patiently shapes our desires and helps us live in a way that honors Christ.
Some days we may feel deeply aware of the Lord’s presence. On other days, our feelings may be quiet or unsettled. Christ’s faithfulness does not change with our emotions. We can keep coming to Him, trusting His promises, and taking the next faithful step.
A simple daily rhythm
Four ways to draw near today
Begin with dependence
Before reaching for the day’s demands, tell Jesus that you need Him. Ask Him to guide your thoughts, words, and choices.
Carry one verse
Read a short passage slowly and return to it during the day. Ask what it shows you about Christ and how you can respond.
Pray in ordinary moments
Speak honestly with the Lord while driving, working, walking, or caring for others. Bring Him gratitude, worries, and decisions.
End the day in grace
Thank Christ for His help, confess where you fell short, and entrust unfinished concerns to Him. Rest in His mercy.
Pause and reflect
Questions for your heart
- In which part of my daily life am I most tempted to rely only on myself?
- How would remembering Christ’s presence change the way I approach one ordinary responsibility today?
- Is there a burden, failure, or fear that Christ is inviting me to bring to Him in faith?
Prayer
Growing Closer to Christ
Heavenly Father, help me draw close to you. You are my well. You are my everything. And if you see fit, as I grow close to you, let me serve you. So be it, Lord. Thy will be done. In Jesus’ name, amen.
